Students Conduct Research at OSU’s Stone Lab

Paul Genzman’s Environmental Science students spent the day at OSU’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island near Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island. Led by Stone Lab instructors, students conducted a variety of tests on the water near Rattlesnake Island measuring wind speed, air and water temperature, water clarity, and wave height.  They took water samples to look for the presence of zooplankton, phytoplankton, fish, and invertebrates.

“This trip is a truly unique experience for our students.  We talk in class about how special the Great Lakes are on a global scale for their fresh water and incredible biodiversity.  It becomes so much more meaningful when you are on a boat with fresh water as far as you can see.  You are able to observe microscopic organisms you didn’t know existed or tally the variety of fish species captured in the trawl. It is so rewarding to see how excited our students are to be there. We are so fortunate to have this experience!” shares teacher Paul Genzman.

The students also learned about the ecosystem, environmental challenges caused by human impact, success of conservation efforts, the role of Stone Lab, and the history of the region. Special thanks to Stone Lab and their amazing instructors.

Thanks to Paul Genzman and OHSPA for making the field trip possible and to our chaperones Jasa George and Brandon Carter.  Special thanks to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association for making this transformative experience possible.

Following the trip to Stone Lab, Genzman’s environmental science class walked down to the Ottawa River today to conduct similar tests to the ones they did at Stone Lab.  This week, they will compare the chemical and physical properties of water at each location.  In recent years, the Village of Ottawa Hills has made considerable improvements to the river through various community cleanups, including the removal of a dam and of invasive species.

Classes of 1967 and 2004 Return to OHHS for Reunions

The Class of 1967 returned to Ottawa Hills for a special reunion and birthday celebration, with nearly all of these graduates either having recently turned or about to turn 75!

The Class of 2004 celebrated their 20th reunion, with members traveling from California, Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, Michigan, and various parts of Ohio. Nearly two dozen classmates attended Friday night’s football game and celebrated the victory against Erie Mason. On Saturday, they enjoyed dinner at Hannon’s Block, a downtown restaurant owned by Michael Stancati (OH ’03), older brother of Jenny Stancati (OH ’04).

Both classes had the opportunity to tour the high school, led by Director of Development Erica Silk. Special thanks to Erica Silk for hosting this memorable tour!
