Service Learning In Kenya (SLIK)
Tuesday, February 20
6:30pm High School Library

The next Service Learning In Kenya (SLIK) program is taking place this June and as many OHHS students have experienced in the past, this is a unique opportunity for your rising junior or senior student to spend part of their summer volunteering as teachers in a primary school in rural Kenya. The trip also includes a hike on Mt. Kenya and a visit to one of Kenya’s famous game reserves.  Fred Roberts, SLIK’s director and OHHS grad of ‘79, will be giving a presentation about SLIK on February 20 in the library at 6:30 PM.  You can also learn more about SLIK at the website.  Fred may be reached at frob5350@gmail.com with any questions.

ACT-Grade 11

Tuesday, February 27

All juniors are taking the ACT the morning of Tuesday, February 27. This is a state-funded opportunity for our students to take the test and have their scores sent to the colleges or universities of their choice. Attendance on that day is very important and students should anticipate a long morning with a delayed lunch hour. Good luck to our juniors!

Choraliers Spread Joy, Love, and Hope on Valentine’s Day

The Choraliers were busy spreading the love all over Ottawa Hills, Toledo, and surrounding areas on Wednesday! Their eleven stops were comprised of familiar faces and new ones, too. Some of the highlights of the day were the outreach concerts at Kingston Residence of Perrysburg, Sunset Village in Sylvania, and the Thomas M. Wernert Center for Mental Health Recovery and Support.  Special thanks to Choraliers alum Maddie Cummins for inviting the group to the Wernert Center for the Valentine’s party.

Vocal Music Director Hayley Hoss shares, “Not only did we share our music, but we also raised over $800 for the student-selected charity Neighborhood Bridges. This organization was founded in 2017 to respond to the growing rate of poverty in suburban and rural America and ‘bridges’ the needs of communities with schools through direct giving to remove barriers and seek equity for all students.”

Special thanks to Joy Hajjar who planned our memorable day and acted as liaison with our patrons and the DeMilt household for carrying on the tradition of hosting our senior breakfast. Thanks Joy, Maura, and John!

Empowering Young Scientists: Highlights from the 2024 Ottawa Hills Science Fair

The annual local Ottawa Hills Science Fair was held on Thursday, February 8th at OHHS in the new Foundry. Over 60 students shared results for 46 different projects that asked important questions like ““How do glow sticks work?” “What is the most effective learning style?” “What grade level (age group) has the dirtiest hands?” “How does soil PH impact growth?” The Science Fair has looked a little different the last couple years as all students can register for and participate in the District Science Day at University of Toledo rather than having to qualify. Instead of the traditional "judging,” the researchers from our local community, BGSU and the University of Toledo took on the role as a "science coach.” The research “coaches” listened to the students’ presentations, and then gave them feedback about their projects and how they might improve them for the District Science Fair in March.

Big thank you to all of the wonderful science coaches that participated in the Ottawa Hills Science Fair this year. The coaches this year included Ottawa Hills villagers and community partners: Mrunmayee Kandalgaonkar, Sachin Aryal, Randy Ellingson, Dhilhani Moahmmed Faleel, Saroj Khadka, Shrestha Upasana.

Congratulations to all the student scientists from Mrs. Puskala, Mrs. Silvers, and Mr. Nixon’s classes that participated in the annual Ottawa Hills Science Fair. Good luck at the District Science Day!
