ACT-Grade 11

Tuesday, February 24

All juniors are taking the ACT the morning of Tuesday, February 24. This is a state-funded opportunity for our students to take the test and have their scores sent to the colleges or universities of their choice. Attendance on that day is very important and students should anticipate a long morning with a delayed lunch hour. Good luck to our juniors!

Record-Breaking Science Fair Showcases Student Innovation at Ottawa Hills

On Thursday, February 12, the Foundry at Ottawa Hills High School hosted one of the most successful Science Fair in the school's history. This year’s event featured over 90 students presenting 57 unique projects, marking a significant milestone for the district's STEM program.

The projects reflected an extraordinary breadth of scientific inquiry, with student research spanning more than eight disciplines. Visitors and judges explored innovative work across botany, environmental chemistry, ecology, physics, behavioral psychology, chemistry, anatomy, and engineering.

To ensure the highest academic standards, the fair featured an esteemed panel of judges, including researchers, graduate students, and professors and graduate students from the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University. Working alongside local science educators, the judges used a rigorous rubric to provide students with professional-level feedback, helping them refine their research for future competitions.

This event was made possible through the dedication of the Ottawa Hills faculty and staff. Sincere thanks go to Gloria Kreischer-Gajewicz and Jeremy Nixon for their exceptional organization, as well as Liz Puskala, Nicole Silvers, and Tim Adkins for their tireless mentorship and support of student research. Special thanks to Jessica Loudermilk and the Foundry staff for accommodating the Science Fair participants and hosting our guest judges. Congratulations to all the student scientists for their hard work and dedication to the spirit of discovery.

Record-Breaking Results for Swim Team at Sectionals

Competing against some of the toughest schools in the area, our swimmers turned in a powerhouse performance at Sectionals. The girls’ team secured a fantastic 4th place finish, while the boys’ team fought hard to take 5th overall.

Beyond the team scores, the record books were rewritten thanks to some historic individual efforts. Thomas Lathrop didn't just win the 200 Individual Medley (IM); he shattered a sectional record that had stood since 1991. Thomas also climbed the top of the podium to win the 500 Freestyle.

Audrey Nixon proved to be a distance powerhouse, being crowned sectional champion in both the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle. Mary Lathrop showed incredible speed and technique to take first place in the 100 Backstroke, and Rafaela Marson outpaced the field with a dominant win in the 100 Breaststroke.

Congratulations to all our swimmers on a spectacular season. Your hard work has clearly paid off in the postseason!

Spreading Joy Through Song: The Choraliers’ Singing Valentines Tradition

On Friday, February 13, the Choraliers once again shared the power of music throughout the Village and the greater Toledo area. This year’s stops included the elementary school office, Judge Puffenberger’s courtroom, and California Yoga. In a heartwarming surprise, they also performed for the parents of our administrative assistant, Wendi Weber.

Honoring tradition, the Choraliers performed a beautiful selection of songs, including Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, You Make Me Feel So Young, Someone to Watch Over Me, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, and She’s Got a Way.

This year’s event marked a special milestone for student teacher Noah Beasely, who had his first opportunity to conduct the Choraliers. Noah was deeply moved by the experience, sharing, "Wherever I land next year, I hope to bring the tradition of the Singing Valentines with me. It was an incredible experience to share music with the community in that way."

The Singing Valentines initiative is one of the many ways the Choraliers give back to the community, and this year, they raised over $1,000 for UNICEF. Click here to donate.

A special thank you to Cecily Denny for organizing this memorable event and serving as the liaison with our patrons. We also appreciate the Douglas family for hosting a wonderful breakfast, the OHMTA for providing a delicious pizza lunch, and Aundre Graham for safely transporting our students around Greater Toledo.
