Home to Home Students Experience an Unforgettable Night at UT Basketball Students from Home to Home attended the University of Toledo men's basketball game against Northern Illinois University. Although UT maintained a comfortable lead for most of the game, NIU closed the gap in the final minutes, creating an exciting nail-biter. In the end, the Rockets secured the victory. Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk, Director of Player Development Brett Rau, and Athletic Director Bryan Blair made this special visit possible and generously spent time with our students after the game. They shared insights into their professions and the rewards of being involved in collegiate athletics, while also offering valuable advice on the importance of selflessness, teamwork, and demonstrating strong character both on and off the court. Additional thanks to Public Address Announcer Kevin Mullan, who invited the group onto the court after the game for a photo op with UT mascots Rocky and Rocksy. Home to Home is a unique partnership with a mission to "gather the Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School communities in intentional, safe, and honest platforms focused on fostering relationships, developing leadership, and strengthening understanding." We also extend our appreciation to H2H advisors Nakiiah Wright, Dr. Carnel Smith, Joe Peterson, Erica Silk, Nikki Tolliver, and Ben McMurray. Special thanks to Ottawa Hills bus driver Aunndre Graham for ensuring the group’s safe transportation to the game. This partnership is made possible through the Kadens Family Leadership Series. |

Ottawa Hills Hosts AFS Diversity Weekend, Celebrating Global Cultures This past weekend, AFS and the Diversity/International Student Exchange Club hosted Diversity Weekend, bringing together AFS international exchange students from across northwest Ohio for a memorable stay in Ottawa Hills. On Friday morning, students from Switzerland, Italy, and Spain shared presentations about their cultures with Ottawa Hills students at both the junior/senior high school and elementary school. The day continued with engaging afternoon and evening activities, fostering meaningful connections between the exchange students and the local community. Linda Sherry, AFS Liaison, uses this weekend as a mid-year check-in, giving exchange students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences. Alongside formal activities, the students explored the Henry Ford, Toledo Museum of Art and the UT Rec Center. Ottawa Hills Diversity Club students joined in on some of the fun, and the Parikh family hosted an ice cream social to wrap up the weekend. Reflecting on the event, Mrs. Sherry shared, “We had a wonderful weekend! All of the kids, AFS and OHHS, were kind, enthusiastic, polite, inclusive, and engaged. The AFS students commented on how friendly our entire community was. They wanted to stay longer!” Ms. Shawaker echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Our AFS club members did an excellent job making them feel at home and guiding them through the high school and elementary classrooms while they presented their home countries and cultures.” A special thank you to junior/senior high school teachers Noreen Hanlon, Cheri Palko, Liz Puskala, Caitlin Shawaker, Karen Fischer, Nicole Silvers, Claudio Cabrera, and elementary teachers Rachel Wanner, Jami Lewandowski, Emily Atherine, Heidi Morris, Laurie Keating, Lianne Genzman, Ali Packo, Mrs. Frost-Hudson who welcomed student speakers into their classrooms. Gratitude also goes to the families who hosted AFS students for the weekend, as well as Linda Sherry, Dennis Sherry, Caitlin Shawaker, Liza Halloran, Kristin Tucker, Katherine Navarre, Sheri Brancato, the Ellingson, Weaver, and Parikh families, and the many parent volunteers who helped make this experience possible. Ottawa Hills has proudly partnered with AFS since 1962, continuing its mission to bring the world closer together. |
