AFS Assembly Connects Ottawa Hills to the World

Last Tuesday, Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School had the pleasure of hosting an outstanding assembly organized by our AFS (American Field Service) Club. The event highlighted the importance of global perspectives and the incredible value of cultural exchange.

The assembly began with our own AFS Club President, senior Quinton Smith, who spoke about the various activities the group organizes to promote international understanding within our school.

The centerpiece of the assembly was a presentation by exchange student Nicolo "Nico" Dipasquale. Nico, who joins us this year from Italy, did an incredible job presenting to the entire student body, faculty, and staff. He shared fascinating insights about his home country and offered humorous and thoughtful comparisons between Italian and American culture. Nico expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to spend the year at Ottawa Hills, thanking the Jones family for welcoming him into their home. We are thrilled to see him enjoying his classes and making contributions as a member of the football team.

Finally, AFS Liaison Linda Sherry provided valuable information about the many opportunities available to our own students to study abroad through AFS programs.

An event like this requires significant effort, special thanks to those who made it possible: AFS Advisor Caitlin Shawker, Linda Sherry, Dennis Sherry, Henry Lenahan, Paige Bergsma, and Trevor Hug.

This assembly was a wonderful reminder of how these programs enrich our entire community. We are so glad to have Nico as a Green Bear this year!

Home-to-Home attends Salesian Leadership Summit

Students from our Home-to-Home partnership, a collaboration between students and staff of Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School, had an inspiring experience at the 2025 Global Salesian Leadership Summit on Monday, October 20.

They joined student leaders from schools across the area, including Clay, Notre Dame Academy, Scott, Waite, SJJ, Perrysburg, Otsego, Rogers, and Toledo Christian, for a day of learning and growth.

Our students enjoyed hearing from an incredible and diverse lineup of speakers. A particular highlight was hearing from Lt. Governor and former OSU head football coach Jim Tressel, who spoke about the importance of facing adversity, keeping focus on improving even when one is successful, being humble, setting goals, and playing as a team.

The impressive roster of featured speakers also included Clint Longenecker, Mike Bell, Bryan Blair, and Brandon Hawkins. Throughout the day, students attended sessions with other esteemed leaders such as Buck Kozlowski, Fr. Krupp, Pat Trompeter, Jake Hoffman, Anna Toney, Dione Somerville, Kate Sommerfeld, Kevan Toney, Claire Mitchell, Brady Fineske, and Chip Weisgerber.

From these sessions, students received valuable advice on developing effective leadership skills, fostering positive relationships, maintaining a strong moral compass, and embracing risk-taking and learning from mistakes.

A huge thank you to our team for making this day possible. Special thanks to Erica Silk and Nikki Tolliver for chaperoning and facilitating our participation in the symposium, and to our colleagues at Scott HS Joe Peterson, Nykiiah Wright, and Carnel Smith for their help. We also extend our gratitude to the Kadens Family Leadership Series for making the Home-to-Home partnership possible.

Finally, a very special thank you to Father Geoff Rose and the staff from St. Francis for hosting their outstanding annual Salesian Leadership Conference and for extending the invitation for our students to participate. Stay tuned for more exciting news from Home to Home!
