| Quiz Bowl The OHHS Quiz Bowl Team finished 5-4 in the Jesse Brown Small School Showcase in Glasgow, KY. According to advisor Tony Torio, “The tournament is a BIG deal - it’s an invitation-only small school showcase and every team is incredibly competitive. I couldn’t be prouder of our team and their performance. We even knocked off the defending national champs in round 1!” Representing OHHS were Olga Isailovic, Ali Sedique, Akash Parikh, and Savith Vjendra. Congratulations to the team and advisor Tony Torio. Special thanks to our parent drivers and chaperones and the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association for their unwavering support and generosity. |

Bridging Communities: Scott and Ottawa Hills Students Unite for Escape Game Experience Students from Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School met this weekend for a fun-filled afternoon at the Escape Game Experience and for lunch at Fallen Timbers. The students were divided up into combined school groups and were assigned one of the three escape room challenges. They honed their collaborating, critical-thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. Students were joined by Scott High School SMARTS program advisor Deborah Sims, intervention specialist and professional storyteller Nykiiah Wright Wright, Erica Silk, OHS Foundation Director of Development and Alumni Relations, and OHHS Principal Ben McMurray. Home to Home, the partnership between the two schools, is designed to bring students from the two communities together to promote leadership, understanding, and cultural competency. The mission of Home to Home “offers the two schools and the Greater Toledo community a unique and powerful opportunity to carve a new path, build bridges, develop shared understandings, and continually create a partnership to build a common future.” The program was made possible through the generosity of Pete Kadens (OH ’96) and the Kadens Family Foundation. |

Snowball Dance Delivers Memorable Evening The annual Snowball dance was held on Saturday at Ottawa Hills High School. By all accounts, the dance exceeded expectations. This year’s Snowball court included: Noah Hamilton, Sevar Mian, Savith Vjendra, Julian Jaume, and Riley Nixon. Julian was crowned Snowball King. Thanks to faculty advisors Janelle Fowler and Stacy Richards and Student Council for organizing this year’s Snowball dance. Special thanks to chaperones Janelle Fowler, Karen Fischer, Jasa George, Gloria Kreischer Gajewicz, Chris Kreischer-Gajewicz, and Ben McMurray. Special thanks to OHPD Officers Sarah Motter and Ben Wolke for providing additional security. |
| Breathe In, Breathe Out: OHbreathe Workshop Day Sparks Connection and Wellness at OH Last Friday, students participated in a variety of workshops during the first OHbreathe of 2024. The purpose of OHBreathe is to inspire positive transformation in the school community by creating a safe and supportive environment for all students, as well as fostering personal growth and deepening connectivity between students and teachers. Among the opportunities were coloring, yoga, board games, Valentines cards, aromatherapy, leisure reading, meditation, arts and crafts, bracelet making, basketball, origami, ceramics, and a nature hike. OHbreathe invited special guest, Matt Bell, from Sober Strong to speak to our students in grades 11 and 12. Ottawa Hills Dance Team Shines: Third in Pom, Tenth in Hip Hop at State Competition The Ottawa Hills High School Dance team competed in the state competition held in Columbus over the weekend. This is the best our dance teams have ever done at the OASSA State competition. Coach Sophie Heidenreich and the team were proud of their season and they appreciate all of the support from Green Bear Nation. Congratulations to team members Lena Bazzoli, Emma Friedman, Ava Jessee, Sarah Stone, Gracyn Connelly, Andrew Stutz, Alice Denney, Ashley Wang, and Isabella Leonardi-Wilkins. |

Exploring the Microcosm: Chemistry Students Dive into SEM Analysis with UT's SCOPE Program Dr. K-G’s chemistry students were able to operate a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) through UT’s SCOPE program to see how to analyze a sample to determine the chemical composition. Stories of Hope: Matt Bell Inspires Juniors and Seniors with Message of Recovery and Community Support Team Recovery’s Matt Bell spoke to juniors and seniors at yesterday’s OHBreathe session. Matt shared his personal struggles with addiction and his journey of recovery and wellness since October of 2015. In addition to the effect addiction can have on a person’s mental and physical health, he spoke about the impact it had on family, friends, loved ones, and community. He stressed the importance of community resources and support and the powerful interventions like Lucas County’s DART program, as well as how acts of compassion from police officers and counselors can save lives. He’s grateful for all the people that have assisted him along the way. Finally, he offered the following advice: “1) do what is right, 2) do your best, 3) show people you care.” Thanks, Matt Bell, Ava Jesse, Ella Douglas, Ava Lenahan, Evie Heidenreich, and the entire OHbreathe team for a thoughtful and compassionate afternoon at Ottawa Hills. |
