Board approves move to SBC Following unanimous Board of Education approval, Ottawa Hills will join the Sandusky Bay Conference (SBC) starting July 1, 2026. The Green Bears will remain in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC) for the 2025-2026 school year. A huge thank you to Athletic Director Ryan Wronkowicz for his work in securing this exciting opportunity for our student-athletes! Key benefits of moving to the SBC Better fit with similar schools: The SBC consists primarily of Division V, VI and VII schools that are comparable in size to Ottawa Hills, offering a more balanced and competitive experience for student-athletes. Strong invitation: Ottawa Hills was the unanimous top choice among superintendents and principals from all SBC member schools (six public, two private). Improved scheduling: Many SBC schools are already on Ottawa Hills’ schedule as nonconference opponents—these will now become conference games. In sports like girls basketball, where TAAC schools lacked full participation, the SBC provides more consistent competition and junior high programming. Similar travel: Using girls basketball as an example, under the current TAAC schedule, Ottawa Hills averages 43 miles per road game. A mock SBC schedule shows travel reduced to an average of 32 miles per game. This also allows more flexibility to schedule local nonconference games. Greater opportunities for junior high sports: SBC schools offer more robust junior high programs, helping Ottawa Hills fill schedules that have been challenging to complete within the TAAC. Future-focused planning: Draft schedules for the 2026 season are already in the works, ensuring a smooth transition. Enhanced challenge: The SBC will present a healthy, elevated level of competition for Ottawa Hills athletes.
Watch Mr. Wronkowicz discuss the benefits of joining the SBC at the March 26 Board meeting around the 39:50 mark here. Read the updated press release here. Please feel free to direct any questions to our Athletic Director at rwronkowicz@ohschools.org. |
