Ottawa Hills Girls Cross Country Wins Division IV State Championship!

The Ottawa Hills Girls Cross Country team made school history this weekend, capturing the Division IV State Championship in a remarkable performance among 214 runners from across Ohio.

Leading the way was Natalie Nixon, who placed an outstanding 5th overall, followed by strong performances from Emily Chen, Molly Mullan, Freya Klaas, Mercy Alamina, Piper Padgett, and Evelyn Sandretto. Together, these runners showcased incredible teamwork, grit, and determination to bring home the top honor.

In a dramatic finish, the Green Bears edged out 17-time state champions Minster High School, marking a truly special victory for Ottawa Hills.

The team was guided by dedicated coaches Jeremy Nixon, Mark Sandretto, and Emily Nixon, whose leadership and commitment have inspired excellence all season long.

The boys team also had an impressive showing in the Division III Championship, representing Ottawa Hills with pride and perseverance on the state’s biggest stage.

A heartfelt congratulations goes out to all of our athletes, coaches, supportive parents, and Athletic Director Ryan Wronkowicz for making this championship season possible. Special thanks as well to the OHSAA and all of the tournament organizers and volunteers who helped create an unforgettable state championship experience.

The OHPD greeted our champions when they returned to the Village on Saturday afternoon and led a parade back to Coach Nixon’s home on Orchard.  Hundreds of people came out to cheer on and congratulate the team.

Stay tuned for details about an upcoming assembly for the team.  They will be presented with an official proclamation from Mayor Thompson, present the trophy to Athletic Director Ryan Wronkowicz so that it can be proudly displayed in the showcase in the main hallway.

Home-to-Home: "Igniting" Connections

The Home-to-Home partnership, which brings together students from Ottawa Hills High School and Scott High School, continues to build bridges between the two school communities and participate in leadership and social activities.

Recently, Home-to-Home students spent an inspiring day with Mr. David Bush, the City of Toledo Youth Commissioner. The theme for the day was "Ignite," and Mr. Bush led the students through a powerful series of activities designed to strengthen their communication skills, enhance their leadership abilities, and, most importantly, build bridges between the two schools. This foundational day will serve as a springboard for the group's work throughout the year.

These meaningful experiences are only possible with the support of dedicated staff, parents, and community partners. Heartfelt gratitude is also extended to OHSPA parents Erica Kelm and Julie Macmillan for providing a delicious lunch for the students during the "Ignite" leadership day, and to Adam Reny from First Tee-Lake Erie for graciously hosting the students. A special thank you to bus driver Ed Lawson for ensuring the students arrived safely at both events. Finally, the Home-to-Home program would not be possible without the vision and generous support of the Kadens Family Foundation.

Thanks to Home-to-Home advisors and chaperones Joe Peterson, Nykiiah Wright, Erica Silk, Nikki Tolliver, and Ben McMurray. The Home-to-Home partnership has a very exciting year ahead. The group is planning a trip to Chicago later this month, where they will meet with Pete Kadens (OH'93), the inspiration for this entire program. They will continue their work with David Bush and take in the sights and sounds of the Windy City.

Students Shine at 54th Annual 'Focus' Art Show

Congratulations to several of our talented student artists who were recognized at the recent 54th Annual Historic FOCUS Show! Savio Deiger, Sloan Clausen, and Sahil Parikh were all recognized for their outstanding work. We are especially proud to announce that Sloan Clausen received the Principal's Choice Award and Savio Deiger received the Superintendent's Award.

Their work is featured as part of a massive exhibition that includes more than 100 pieces of art from students representing over 17 high schools and more than 27 art teachers from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Dating back to 1971, the Focus Show is one of the longest running and largest high school art shows in the region. For the last 54 years, it has celebrated the passion that both students and teachers have for the visual arts and championed the importance of art education. This sense of connection was evident at the awards ceremony. Art teacher Kristin Johnson noted the incredible atmosphere: "There were HUNDREDS of people at the awards ceremony. Local artists and art educators highlighted the importance of art in our lives and the impact it has on our world." This wonderful achievement would not be possible without our dedicated art teachers, Kristin Johnson and Caitlin Shawker, who guide our students every day. A special thank you is also extended to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association and the Ottawa Hills Schools Foundation for their generous and ongoing support of our entire fine arts program.

We encourage the school and community to celebrate our students' participation in this awesome show, which is deeply rooted in Toledo's artistic legacy. The exhibition runs through December 13 at the UT's Center for the Visual Arts at the Toledo Museum of Art. Finally, a special thank you to show directors Jennifer Moorman and Jodie Peace for organizing this fantastic event and advocating for arts education to create a more connected community. Show runs from 11/8-12/13 at the CVA at the Toledo Museum of Art.

The college application season hit a major milestone on November 1, and our seniors celebrated their hard work in a fittingly future focused way!

School Counselor Crystal Burnworth hosted a special "Welcome to Our Dorm" luncheon in the library to congratulate the students who completed their applications for the early deadline. Giving them a taste of college life, the celebration featured a full spread of dorm room staples, including Ramen noodles, pizza rolls, "hot pockets," mac and cheese, cereal, veggies and dip, a cheese and meat tray, and bagels.

This event marked the culmination of a long journey for these students. Ms. Burnworth shared that she is incredibly proud of the work they have done since many of them embarked on the application process at her summer bootcamp.

Of course, this success is a community effort. Ms. Burnworth extends a special thanks to English teacher Sara Eisenbaum, who was instrumental in helping students craft their essays. A huge thank you also goes out to all the teachers and administrators who supported the Class of 2026 by writing thoughtful and impactful letters of recommendation. Special thanks to the office staff for dressing up in “dorm room” attire to welcome the newbies.

Congratulations, seniors, on this major accomplishment!
