OHHS Students Attend Youth Summit

Student representatives from Student Council traveled to Downtown Toledo to the Glass City Metropark Enrichment Center for a special Youth Summit sponsored by State Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson. Students from Ottawa Hills were joined by other students from the Toledo area.

Senator Hicks-Hudson gave an overview of the purpose and function of state government and how it impacts the lives of students locally. She discussed gun violence prevention, law enforcement, and invited students to share their concerns and outline issues that are pressing for young people today.

Senator Hicks-Hudson encouraged students to be active participants in the political process, stay informed about important issues, and make their voices heard by state legislators by writing letters, emails, calling local legislative offices, and attending public forums.

Special thanks to Student Council Co-Advisor Matt Chappuies for chaperoning this field trip.  Thanks to Eric Swisher for safely transporting our students to and from the event.

CSTAG Training

On Wednesday, April 22, Assistant Principal Mandy Ricketts, Director of Student Services Jeff Pellerito, School Psychologist Sharon Barnett, and School Counselors Crystal Burnworth and Nikki Tolliver attended training on Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG). Joining the team were elementary school counselors Elizabeth Syrowski and Mary Beth Ellison.

This research-based approach focuses on prevention and best practices for school safety, utilizing a tiered intervention structure and a collaborative team-based approach like PBIS and MTSS. CSTAG is an evidence-based model developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell at the University of Virginia. It is designed to help school multidisciplinary teams differentiate between threats that are not serious (transient) and those that pose a real danger (substantive).

The training was conducted by Brian Bollinger from the Ohio School Safety Center and Angie Rechtine from the ESC-Lake Erie West. These threat assessment and response protocols are now used for every threat to school safety. Our dedicated team, which includes the Student Assistance Team and Ben Wolke or Sarah Motter from the Ottawa Police Department, meets monthly to ensure our safety standards remain current. Resources from the training are available in the faculty and staff handbook.

Many thanks to Elizabeth Syrowski for encouraging the teams from the elementary and junior/senior high schools to participate in this training.

Mechatronics Club Showcases Innovation at College of Engineering Senior Expo

The Mechatronics Club recently attended the University of Toledo College of Engineering Senior Design Expo to showcase their latest technical milestones. Under the guidance of advisor Patty Dowd, students have been mastering ladder logic to program a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) capable of solving a Rubik’s Cube. During the event, members shared their progress with attendees and collaborated with other high school teams tackling similar challenges.

Beyond the technical demonstrations, students engaged with UT Engineering undergraduates to discuss research projects and academic life. The event also served as a mini-reunion; Mrs. Dowd connected with alumni Jacob Geiger (’21) and Fazon Alvi (’25), who are both currently pursuing engineering degrees at UT.

The Mechatronics Club was founded by junior Henry Sun, with foundational support from Professor William T. (Ted) Evans and teacher Patty Dowd. We extend our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Dowd and Professor Evans for their continued dedication to our students’ success.
