Dear Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School Parents and Guardians,

As we prepare to head into the end of the semester, I am writing to inform you of an important, short-term schedule experiment we will be conducting immediately upon our return from Thanksgiving break.

From Monday, December 1st, through Thursday, December 4th, we will be temporarily adopting an eight-period daily schedule. This four-day trial is entirely focused on gathering data and collecting feedback. I want to assure you that this is an exploratory step only and not a commitment to a schedule change.

This experiment is part of our commitment to continuously review and improve the learning environment for our students. As you may know, the scheduling committee has been researching alternatives to our current rotating system. The core goals for this research are centered on enhancing the student experience:

  • Increase instruction time and frequency, allowing students to see their teachers daily, particularly in critical subjects like Math.

  • improve our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) processes to ensure every student receives the individualized academic and emotional support they need.

  • Ensure we are making the best use of our dedicated staff and excellent facility resources.

Our dedicated staff has approached the preparation for this experiment with a "researcher’s mindset," focusing on observing the opportunities and challenges this structure presents. We will also be actively seeking insight and feedback from our students and from you, our parents, during and immediately following this four-day trial.

The detailed experimental bell schedule for December 1-4 is below. We anticipate minimal disruption to your students’ daily routine, as the core subjects and course sequences will remain consistent—only the daily flow will change.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this trial, please feel free to reach out to me or the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Bill Miller.

Thank you for your flexibility and partnership as we continue this important work to find the best possible structure for our students' academic success.

Best regards,

Ben McMurray, Principal
