The Steam Café Grand Opening: A Collaborative Business Lab Experience Begins! The Steam Café—the OHJSHS hands-on business lab-officially opened its doors this today! This year, over 30 students have participated in comprehensive training, preparing them to take on various roles within the café. A special shoutout to Kadin Brown, Xuan Huang, Annie Bahar, and Hannah Chow, who have taken the lead on scheduling, ordering, training, and quality control. Their hard work and leadership are instrumental in ensuring smooth operations. Additionally, Darrin Broadway and Troy Brown are managing daily operations and overseeing the financial side of the café. Rebecca McLean, Alta Richter, and Carrie Bork will also provide additional guidance and support through their supervision. To make the café experience even more enriching, the Steam Café staff are looking for 3-5 parents who can volunteer an hour or two each week to assist with the daily operations. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents to engage with students and help create a collaborative, fun atmosphere. Your involvement would contribute to the ongoing success of this unique educational initiative. They look forward to another exciting year of learning, collaboration, and community building at The Steam Café! Photo and story by Darrin Broadway |

Building Connections: Junior High Students Enjoy a Fun-Filled Unplugged Grill-Out Last Thursday, more than 100 junior high students gathered for an after-school grill-out, enjoying an afternoon filled with food, games, and great company. The 7th and 8th graders participated in various activities, including cornhole and spike ball, all while spending quality time with friends and classmates. The atmosphere was lively, and students had the chance to relax and unwind after a busy school day. This event, organized by the dedicated junior high faculty and staff, is part of the school's effort to create “junior high only” experiences to foster a positive school climate. By focusing on social interaction without the distractions of technology, the program helps foster a sense of community, encouraging students to build stronger, more authentic connections. We extend our appreciation to everyone who helped make this event a success, and we look forward to continuing these important gatherings that enhance our school culture and create lasting memories for our students. Research Class Explores Advanced Photosynthesis and Algal Research at University of Toledo The Ottawa Hills Honors Scientific Research class recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the lab of Village resident Dr. Scott Heckathorn at the University of Toledo. During the visit, students were introduced to state-of-the-art photosynthesis equipment, toured the university's impressive greenhouse, and explored various growth chambers used in Dr. Heckathorn’s groundbreaking, federally funded research on plant biology and algal toxins. One of the highlights of the trip was the chance for students to view algae under a microscope, gaining a closer look at the subjects of Dr. Heckathorn’s research. The hands-on experience offered valuable insights into the world of scientific research, exposing students to advanced techniques and equipment used by professionals in the field. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Scott Heckathorn and the University of Toledo for providing such an educational and inspiring experience. This visit not only deepened the students' understanding of plant biology and environmental science but also sparked excitement for future scientific exploration. Photos and story by Jeremy Nixon |
