Attendance Reminders from Mrs. George...

With seven weeks left in the school year, I would like to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of regular school attendance. When students are consistently present and on time to class, they are more likely to stay engaged, perform well academically, and build strong connections with their peers and teachers.

Here are a few key reminders:

  • Email jhhsattendance@ohschools.org if your child is absent. If the absence is due to illness or a medical appointment, we ask that you provide a doctor’s note when possible.

  • Excessive unexcused absences or tardies may lead to academic challenges and potential attendance interventions.

  • If your family has a pre-planned trip or sporting event, please email Jasa George at jgeorge@ohschools.org to request a permissible absence form at least five days in advance so we can work together to ensure your child stays on track.

Spring Sports Assembly Launches a New Era of Green Bear Spirit!

On Friday, members of Student Council hosted the annual Spring Sports Assembly, bringing the entire school together to celebrate our athletes and ignite school pride. Captains from each spring sports team were recognized for their leadership and accomplishments, and several football players were honored for earning All-Ohio recognition. Students also faced off in an exciting and spirited game of four-square volleyball, showcasing friendly competition between the classes.

But perhaps the most memorable moment of the day was the introduction of a new symbol of Green Bear pride: the Once-ler. With great fanfare, the Once-ler announced the beginning of a new era for Green Bear Nation—an era focused on revitalizing our school spirit and taking it to the next level!

Matt Chappuies, co-advisor for Student Council, shared, “That picture perfectly captures what we are aiming to accomplish — a fresh look, a renewed mascot, and someone to help reignite the spirit we’ve been missing. The Once-ler is introducing the Spirit Rings as a way for each class to reclaim their energy and pride. These rings will eventually come together to form the Olympic emblem, symbolizing unity as we march into the stadium for May Day events."

Matt added, "It’s important that the Spirit Rings start becoming highly visible around the school — a reminder that Epic May Day is right around the corner!"

A huge thank you to our Student Council members for organizing such a fantastic event and to their dedicated advisors, Nikki Tolliver and Matt Chappuies, for their leadership and creativity. The energy and excitement from the assembly set the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable spring at Ottawa Hills!

Ottawa Hills and Scott High School Students Connect Through Health, Wellness, and Fun

On Sunday, April 27, students from Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School came together for a powerful and inspiring health and wellness workshop led by David Bush, Commissioner of Youth Services and his colleague Dr. Tequilla Thomas.

As part of the Division of Youth Services’ broader initiative to promote health education and mental wellness in Toledo, students learned about Youth Be Heard (Mind) — a program designed to empower young people to prioritize their mental well-being. This initiative focuses on three key areas: prioritizing self-care, fostering strong connections, and seeking help early when facing challenges. Through activities like exercise, hobbies, open communication, and recognizing early signs of mental distress, Youth Be Heard (Mind) helps students build resilience and lead healthier lives.

Following the workshop, students traveled to IncrediBOWL in South Toledo, where they enjoyed a late lunch, bowling, and time to build new friendships. It was a memorable afternoon filled with connection, laughter, and community spirit.

Students were supported by Scott High School SMARTS Program Advisor Nykiiah Wright, Scott High School Hub Director Joe Peterson, Scott HS Principal Carnell Smith, Ottawa Hills Director of Development Erica Silk, and Principal Ben McMurray.

This event was part of Home to Home, the ongoing partnership between Scott and Ottawa Hills. Home to Home is designed to bring students from two different communities together to foster leadership, understanding, and cultural competency. Its mission is to “offer the two schools and the Greater Toledo community a unique and powerful opportunity to carve a new path, build bridges, develop shared understandings, and continually create a partnership to build a common future.”

We extend our sincere gratitude to Pete Kadens (OH ’96) and the Kadens Family Foundation for their vision and generosity in making this program possible. Their support allows our students to create meaningful connections and become leaders who will shape a better future.

Quiz Bowl Finishes Strong at Nationals

Our Ottawa Hills High School Quiz Bowl team showed incredible skill and teamwork throughout the competition.

At the end of Day One, they finished with a record of 6-4, earning a spot in the playoffs on Day Two. After a fantastic effort, the team finished 21st overall in the competition!

Day Two was a double elimination playoff with the teams that qualified on Saturday. The team was seeded 40 and faced a tight match against #25, which we unfortunately lost. However, we came back strong and upset #26 to eliminate them from the competition! Our final match was against Pandora, who were seeded #15. They’ve beaten us 3 or 4 times this year, as one of the top two teams in Ohio.

Here are some highlights from their performance:

Total Matches Played: 13

Record: 7-5

A huge shoutout to our dedicated team members: Josef Duley, Sahil Parikh, Meral Humaida, Quinton Smith, Rohan Padhye, and Zach Rashid—and our amazing coach, Tim Adkins! Your hard work and determination have truly paid off. We are so proud of your accomplishments and can’t wait to celebrate together!

Big Futures Finale: An Inspiring Night of Entrepreneurship and Opportunity

Last Monday evening, the final Big Futures event of the year delivered a powerful and inspiring experience for our students. Held at The Foundry, the evening provided a unique opportunity to explore the world of entrepreneurship and business ownership.

Students had the privilege of learning from an outstanding panel of local business leaders, each of whom shared their personal journeys and professional insights. Our panelists included Elias Hajjar (The Garden at Poco Piatti), Dr. Jon Frankel (Frankel Dentistry), John Amato (Jupmode), Ashley Sheehan (Beloved Bridal), Amanda and Frank Viviano (Bartz Viviano Florist), and Justin Amburgey (Chick-fil-A). Their stories of perseverance, creativity, and leadership offered students real-world lessons in turning passion into purpose.

After the panel discussion, students participated in small-group breakout sessions focused on key topics such as launching a business, overcoming obstacles, and developing the skills essential for success. Whether hearing about the challenges of growing a brand, managing a team, or bouncing back from setbacks, students walked away with powerful advice and renewed inspiration.

A heartfelt thank you to The Foundry Advisory Board and Darrin Broadway for sponsoring the event, and to our incredible speakers for investing their time and experiences to help inspire the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. Click here to read an article about the event in the Toledo
