Rolling into Review in the Language Lab

American Sign Language (ASL) students kicked off the third quarter by sharpening their signing and interpreting skills through an interactive game called “Roll & Review.” While these students complete their coursework online through the American Sign Language Virtual Academy, they gather in the Language Lab for vital hands-on practice. By rolling dice to determine their signing prompts, the students demonstrated how teamwork makes the communication process more efficient.

Special thanks to Kay Cocke for providing this story and the accompanying photos, and for her ongoing support of our students in ASL and in the Language Lab.

Small School, Big Voices: Speech and Debate Team Triumphs at Otsego

The Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School Speech and Debate team continued its tradition of excellence this past weekend at the Otsego Invitational. Competing against a talented field of students, our young orators delivered standout performances that highlighted their hard work and dedication.

The team is especially proud to celebrate several major individual victories. Eighth grader Anna Yang secured first place in the Extemporaneous Speaking category, while seventh grader Bismann Singh earned the top spot in Original Oratory. The success in Extemporaneous Speaking continued with eighth graders Manal Zaidi taking fourth place and Izzah Ali finishing in sixth. This was a particularly special achievement for Izzah, as it marked her very first competitive tournament.

These achievements are a testament to the students' commitment and the expert guidance of advisor and coach Willow Keller. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association for their ongoing support, which makes these competitive opportunities possible for our students.

Congratulations to the entire team on a successful weekend!

A Historic Night: Skiver Breaks 24-Year-Old Scoring Record

On Friday evening, the Ottawa Hills community witnessed history. During the Green Bears' dominant 69–42 home victory over Cardinal Stritch, sophomore Kendall Skiver delivered a performance for the ages, setting a new school record with 42 points in a single game. Kendall knocked down 2 three-pointers, 18 two-pointers, and completed the night at the free-throw line to reach the historic mark. Her all-around performance was just as impressive, adding 8 assists, 9 steals, and 10 blocked shots. Kendall credited her teammates for their unselfish play and support, saying the record would not have been possible without them.

Head coach Tim Lambert praised both Kendall and the team effort, saying, “Kendall’s performance was special, but what stood out most was her unselfishness and how well her teammates played together. Records like this don’t happen without trust, effort, and great team basketball.”

Kendall’s incredible night surpassed the previous record of 41 points, which was held by Lauren Kruse (’03) and had stood for 24 years. It was a spectacular display of skill and teamwork that led the Green Bears to a decisive win. Congratulations, Kendall, on this monumental achievement!
