Dear Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School Parents and Guardians,
On Friday, September 26 we will be hosting Tracey Tangeman, a federal prosecutor, who will present essential information about cyber safety and online exploitation to students in grades 7-12 during our monthly OHbreathe session, a student-led wellness initiative.
This presentation addresses the growing threat of online predators and digital exploitation that our students face daily. Ms. Tangeman will educate our students about the sophisticated tactics used in sextortion schemes, help them recognize the warning signs of online manipulation, and provide them with concrete strategies to protect themselves in digital environments. Students will also learn about available resources and support systems should they ever find themselves in a compromising situation online.
Last year, members of our administrative team, school counselors, and student council executive board participated in a thorough review session with Ms. Tangeman to evaluate the content and appropriateness of her presentation. Following extensive discussion and careful consideration of the material, there was unanimous agreement that this information represents a crucial component of our students' safety education. The alarming increase in cybercrime targeting adolescents and young adults has made this type of preventive education not just beneficial, but essential for protecting our school community. The content has been carefully designed to be age-appropriate while providing students with the sophisticated understanding they need to navigate an increasingly complex digital landscape. We believe that education and awareness are our most powerful tools in protecting our students from online threats.
Tracey Tangeman brings unparalleled expertise and credibility to this vital topic. As an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio in the criminal division, she and her colleagues have seen a sharp rise in the number of cases involving online exploitation and cybercrime. With forty-four years of experience in criminal law across Toledo's city, state, and federal court systems, she possesses both the legal expertise and practical knowledge necessary to effectively communicate these complex issues to our students.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this presentation, I encourage you to contact me directly at 419.534.5376 or Bmcmurray@ohschools.org. I welcome the opportunity to discuss this important initiative with you. Please note that Ms. Tangeman will present a parent session on the evening of October 6th at 7:00 p.m. in The Foundry.
Thank you for your continued partnership in creating a safe and supportive educational environment for all students.
Sincerely,
Ben McMurray, Principal
Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School
