| Shout out to our amazing school counselors Earlier this month, we celebrated National School Counseling Week. We want to give a big shout out to our incredible school counselors: Mrs. Burnworth, Mrs. Tolliver, Mrs. Celizic, and Ms. Proctor (Syrowski). Last week, members of the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association heard from the counseling staff at their monthly meeting, where counselors explained their role in the district and how they support individuals, small groups, classrooms, and families. Thank you to our counseling team for your dedication to our district! |

| A message from Nurse Baird The health office continues to see students who are out sick with viral illnesses. This includes influenza A as well as other viruses that spread easily through coughing or sneezing. Our maintenance team has been diligent cleaning classrooms, including using the Clorox 360 machine, and recently installed hand sanitizing stations for students to use as they enter the lunchroom. It is important for parents to remember the following: Students should not attend school unless they have been free from the following symptoms for 24 hours: - fever (without the use of fever reducing medication)
- vomiting/diarrhea
Please consider helping your student clean frequently used items, such as their lunch bag and keyboard, with a Clorox wipe, to help prevent the spread of illnesses. |

Counseling lessons this week with Ms. Proctor (Syrowski): Students in grades 3-6 have been focusing on healthy communication skills this month, especially in conflict situations. First, we practiced using "I statements." This week, we discussed barriers to communication, such as listening to respond rather than understand, the amygdala taking over and making it difficult to stay calm, and the complications that arise when others jump into a conflict—like taking sides or gossiping. Students worked in pairs, sitting back-to-back. One partner gave directions while the other listened and drew. The goal was for the listener to recreate a chosen image without seeing it until the end. The direction giver had to break steps down clearly instead of simply saying, "Draw an ice cream cone." The drawer asked clarifying questions, and both partners had to communicate calmly, check for understanding, and adjust their approach as needed. We wrapped up by reflecting on the challenges of the activity and its connection to everyday communication. The students seemed to have a lot of fun! |
