Building Connections: A Special Encounter at the State Swim Meet

At the state swim meet in Canton, Ohio, yesterday, Kate Noone, daughter of OHHS Athletic Hall of Famer David Roadhouse (OH ’62), noticed Thomas Lathrop’s Ottawa Hills sweatshirt and asked if he was the young man who had broken her father’s 62-year-old school record in the 100m butterfly.

This past December, at the Napoleon Invitational, Thomas swam a 55.64—just under Roadhouse’s previous record of 55.7, which he set when he won the state high school championship in his senior year.

Ms. Noone was attending the meet to watch her freshman twins, Chelsea and Desmond, and was also hoping to connect with Thomas.

In another happy coincidence, Mary and Thomas Lathrop will be competing against each other again next week at the Senior Meet at Miami University.  Wishing them and our seniors all the best!

Rainbow Lab: A Colorful Exploration of Equilibrium

Last week, Dr. Gloria Kreischer-Gajewicz’s AP Chemistry students conducted their Rainbow Lab, a hands-on experiment designed to visually demonstrate Le Chatelier's principle.

During the lab, students worked with carefully selected chemical reactions that produced vibrant color changes when the equilibrium of various solutions were disrupted. They observed firsthand how the changes in equilibrium resulted in a striking "rainbow" effect, allowing students to connect theoretical principles to real-world chemical behavior.

Engaging in hands-on learning experiences like the Rainbow Lab helps deepen their understanding of complex scientific ideas while making chemistry both fun and visually captivating.

Food for Thought Field Trip: Ninth Grade Health

Last week, students in Stacy Richards’ health classes volunteered with Food for Thought alongside employees from Lott Industries. Food for Thought staff expressed deep appreciation for the assistance provided by our students.

Mrs. Richards shared, “We helped stock the pantry and distribute groceries. The students absolutely loved it and are already begging me to take them back! I don’t think they expected to enjoy it so much. They really valued interacting with the clientele and felt they were making a meaningful difference. It was a great experience.”

A big thank you to health teacher Stacy Richards for chaperoning this impactful community service opportunity!
