What is a major and minor referral?
This is a question that has come up several times this year, so our PBIS team thought it would be a good time to clarify how referrals work.
When students fall short of meeting our Bear Path Expectations—being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe—they may receive a referral.
Minor Referrals
Most referrals are written by teachers and are considered minor referrals. Teachers are responsible for communicating with families and determining appropriate classroom consequences.
Major Referrals
Major referrals are sent to the office and are handled by building administrators. A major referral may also be issued after a student receives four minor referrals for repeated behaviors. While teachers may write the referral, administrators are responsible for determining the appropriate consequence.
Parent Communication & Documentation
Following a referral, teachers or administrators are expected to communicate with parents or guardians. This communication may take place by email, phone, or in person. Referrals are also kept as documentation to help us monitor patterns of behavior and provide appropriate support.
It is important to note that consequences will typically include some form of restorative practice. This might include a reflection sheet, apology, harm circle, accountability project, or another opportunity for the student to repair harm and take responsibility for their actions.
