OH vs. Edon in food bank challenge next week SeaGate Food Bank and BCSN Sports has pitted Ottawa Hills High School against Edon High School in the Gridiron Giveback to stock local food pantries. Donation bins for non-perishable food items are inside the JHHS until Oct. 23. The winning school will receive a $500 donation to their athletics program and the Gridiron Giveback trophy. District partnership brings webinar to parents TFO Wealth Partners invites all our Ottawa Hills parents to a webinar with author Ron Lieber on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. Ron Lieber, bestselling author and New York Times columnist will be presenting “The Opposite of Spoiled - Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money.” Ron’s talk, based on his book “The Opposite of Spoiled”, speaks to parents and grandparents about how to help children make better financial decisions, develop better habits, and develop the tools they’ll need to be mature beyond their years. Using stories from families with a range of incomes, he identifies a set of traits and virtues that embody the opposite of spoiled and shares how to embrace the topic of money to help raise kids who are more generous and less materialistic. |

A Celebration of Music: Highlights from the Annual Fall Collage Concert The annual Fall Collage concert took place on Sunday evening, showcasing the talents of both the vocal and instrumental music programs from the junior and senior high schools. Vocal Music Director Hayley Hoss and Band Director Michael Leeds carefully selected pieces that highlighted and developed the skills of our young musicians. Over 200 students participated in this concert, performing a beautiful and diverse selection of music, from classical to contemporary, carrying themes of inspiration and the season. The audience was captivated by the complexity and beauty of the performances. Notable pieces included Be Like a Bird, Time, Stand in the River, and Dies Irae by the Choraliers; Regina Coeli, Svi Dilberi, and Pulse performed by the high school concert choir; Rasputin and Hot to Go! by the Marching Band; Dúlamán and Dayung Sampan by the junior high choir; Hymn of Thanksgiving, The Olympic Spirit, Band Class Swing, and Fawkes the Phoenix performed by the junior high Concert Band; a cadence series by the OHHS Drumline; and Who Has Seen the Wind, Sing for Joy, and Selo Selo Moje by the Junior Chorale. Congratulations to all the performers and a special thanks to directors Hayley Hoss and Michael Leeds, as well as accompanist Bob Duris. Our music programs continue to thrive thanks to the generous support of OHMTA members and community partners. Latest Bear Pause Hits the Newsstand The October issue of The Bear Pause is now available in the junior high wing or in Mrs. Cheri Palko's room. The staff worked hard to create an interesting and engaging edition, which includes details about the Washington, D.C. trip, introductions to new junior high students, fall recipes, and much more! According to the newspaper staff, “The mission of The Bear Pause is to provide quality, humorous, and relatable news on trending topics. We’ll keep you informed about fun activities, shoutouts, and upcoming events. Our goal is to give a voice to the student body, bring people together, raise awareness, and celebrate our differences.” The Bear Pause meets during lunch in Mrs. Palko's room. Six OHHS Seniors Named Commended Students in 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program Jacob Rymer, Cole Weaver, Esther Yang, Irene Sun, Hutch Carter, and Annie Bahar have been named Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this (these) scholastically talented senior(s). About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2025 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). ''Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. ''These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. Ms. Reitz captivated students with her story of resilience, teaching them how to transform life's challenges into opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Her core message emphasized the importance of self-love, finding empowerment through adversity, and leading with purpose, themes that resonated with students across all grade levels as well as faculty and staff.
