A Magical Evening at the Snowball Dance More than 150 students enjoyed an exciting and memorable evening on Saturday at the annual Snowball dance. DJ Myke Vegas from Rico Sounds kept the energy high as the emcee, providing a fun mix of music to get everyone on the dance floor. A highlight of the evening came when Will Summers was crowned Snowball King, marking a special moment of the festivities. This wonderful event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of many individuals. A heartfelt thank you goes to Student Council co-advisor Nikki Tolliver and the members of the dance committee, including Mary Lathrop, Abby Speakman, Miles Wharry, Trace Douglas, Nina Clark, Maya Choksey, Stella Kuhn, Molly Rybarczyk, and Sofia Denk, for their creativity and efforts in planning the event. Special recognition also goes to OHPD officers Sarah Motter and Jade Nelson, whose presence helped ensure a safe and enjoyable evening, as well as to faculty chaperones Gloria Kreischer-Gajewicz, Chris Gajewicz, Jasa George, Noreen Hanlon, Troy Brown, and Ben McMurray, for their invaluable support throughout the night. Thank you all for making this year’s Snowball dance a truly unforgettable experience! |

OHbreathe: A Day of Wellness, Creativity, and Connection During Friday’s OHbreathe event, students participated in over 20 engaging workshops, while juniors attended a wellness discussion led by local business owner Sonia Flunder. This month introduced exciting new workshops, including loom weaving with art teacher Caitlin Shawaker, crocheting with senior Audrey Lenavitt, pottery with art teacher Kristin Johnson, and creative writing with English teachers Sara Eisenbaum and Sam Abbott. OHbreathe, in collaboration with counselor Nikki Tolliver, also brought back a seasonal favorite—Valentine’s Day card-making for the residents of Sunset House. In addition to the new offerings, OHbreathe reintroduced a beloved tradition, Little Buddies, where science teacher Liz Puskala led over 30 high school students to the elementary school to work with second graders on reading, coloring, and crafts. Other popular workshops this month included yoga with village resident Marie Russell, euchre, and spending time with Ruby, the unofficial OHHS therapy dog. OHbreathe continues its mission of fostering connections across grade levels, with half of the workshops bringing together junior high and high school students. OHbreathe advisor Jessica Kozy extends her gratitude to all the teachers who have volunteered to lead workshops this year—your extra efforts are greatly appreciated! If you have ideas for new workshops, please reach out to student leaders Lena Bazzoli, Irene Sun, Rose Hajjar, or advisor Jessica Kozy. OHBreathe is a student-led wellness program that started in 2017 by Will Rand (’18) and Maggie Mitchell (’18), with support from the faculty and staff and generosity of OHSPA, OH Schools Foundation, and many community partners. |

Winter Sports Assembly Brings Fun, Spirit, and Friendly Competition Special thanks to Student Council co-advisor Nikki Tolliver and the entire Student Council for organizing the annual Winter Sports Assembly and the much-anticipated student/faculty basketball game. The event featured the introduction of the Snowball Court to the student body, which included Ian Flanagan, Bode Wray, Jack Jorgensen, Will Summers, Vaughn Mackey, and Reddick Pillarelli. In an exciting turn of events, the faculty "Dream Team" narrowly defeated the Snowball Court during the basketball game, adding to the fun and festive spirit of the assembly. A big shoutout to Student Council and advisor Nikki Tolliver for putting together such a lively and memorable event. Special recognition goes to the faculty members who participated in the game and to Greg Neuendorf for serving as referee. Great job, Green Bears—what an incredible way to celebrate winter sports and school spirit! Photo of court by Abby Speakman |

Robotics Team Competes at Kalahari Classic Joining more than 59 middle school and 32 high school teams from all over the United States, the Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School robotics teams competed at the Kalahari Classic Invitational in Sandusky, Ohio this past weekend. Four of the five Ottawa Hills teams who entered the competition advanced to the elimination rounds, but fell short of a top placement. Robotics team advisor Patty Dowd shares, “I’m incredibly proud of the students. Every step along the way they strengthen their problem-solving, critical-thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. They learn perseverance and resilience from their successes AND mistakes.” This year’s robotics team includes: Zain Malik, Ahmed Ahmed, Judah Demirdjian, Andrew Siegar, Christian Martin, Joseph Ferreira, Isaac Whewell, Adam Ayan, Max Bigioni, Pranathi Gundabolu, Peyton Ree, Dominic Timmers, Sungjoo Park, Graydon Corns, Jack Borsody, and Kori Mensior. The Kalahari Classic is a Signature Event, which means it is modeled to give students a VEX Worlds-like experience. The winner of this tournament gets a bid to Worlds, so top teams travel from all over the country (and Canada!) to attend this event making competition very tough. Our students were able to watch some of the top robots in North America. Despite two very long days (the tournament began Wednesday evening and continued all day thursday), all the students worked very hard until the very end, adjusting and fixing their robots as needed. Many thanks to teacher and advisor Patty Dowd, parent volunteers, the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association, and the Ottawa Hills Schools Foundation. The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (R.E.C.F.) sponsored the VEX robotics competition. According to the organization’s website, “RECF exists to connect students, mentors, and schools in every community to a variety of successful and engaging technology-based programs. Our goal is to provide these programs with services, solutions, and a community that allows them to flourish in a way that fosters the technical and interpersonal skills necessary for students to succeed in the 21st Century.” More information about the Kalahari Classic and the Vex Robotics competition can be found by clicking here.
