March 2024

March is a busy month at the junior/senior high school. As you know, we are quickly approaching the end of third quarter (March 15). We encourage students to check Powerschool, stay on top of their academic requirements, and make use of the wide range of student supports.

Spring is also the time for state testing, the beginning of a new sports season, and students make course selections for the 23-24 school year.

Please check Powerschool for unpaid fees and fines. The portal for online payments can be accessed through PowerSchool or on the school website. Unfortunately, yearbooks cannot be distributed to students with any unpaid fees and fines.

Choraliers Have an Unforgettable Musical Journey in Cleveland

The Choraliers had an exceptional overnight trip to Cleveland this past weekend. In preparation for their upcoming Spring concert, they participated in a choral clinic led by Dr. Dirk Garner, a professor of conducting and choral studies at Baldwin Wallace University.  The Choraliers were immersed in musical culture all weekend, from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the touring production of Funny Girl. Lastly, the Choraliers sincerely enjoyed spending time with each other outside of rehearsal and getting to know all of their fellow singers as we explored the Cleveland Museum of Art, the West Side Market, Little Italy, and the Corner Alley Bowling Lanes. Thank you to Bob Rogers Travel, our tour guide Ann, our bus driver Laura, and all of the awesome chaperones who stepped up to make our trip possible.

Bridging Communities: Home to Home Students Visit MLK Jr. Mural and Tolhouse

Last Thursday, students from Home to Home made stops at Glenwood Lutheran, the site of the new MLK Jr. mural, and Tolhouse, a community hub of culture, music, innovation, and networking. Although a private club, Tolhouse is the home of Lucille’s Jazz Bar and the Earth Café, both open to the public.

At Glenwood Lutheran, students heard about the Change Wall, a collaborative mural project created by Pastor Chris Hanley, artist and muralist Dean Davis, and John Eikost, Toledo Arts Commission Board member. They hope the mural will be an inspiration to the greater Toledo community to live out Dr. King’s legacy. The mural was inspired by the words of Amanda Gorman and the illustrations from Loren Long from the book Change Sings. Although still unfinished, the Change Wall is nearly complete and can be viewed from the church’s parking lot off Glenwood Avenue near the Toledo Art Museum.

Students spent the rest of the evening with Will Lucas, founder of Tolhouse, and Reverend John Jones from Hope Toledo.  Their messages to students were filled with important insights about how to make a positive impact in the community through compassion, creativity, innovation, collaboration, and vision.

Special thanks to Will Lucas, Reverend John Jones, Pastor Chris Hanley, John Eikost, and Dean Davis for taking the time out of their busy schedules to speak to students from Scott and Ottawa Hills. Thanks to the staff at Tolhouse house for their incredible hospitality and generosity.

Home to Home is a partnership between Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School that strives to establish connections. The mission of the partnership is to gather the Scott High School and the Ottawa Hills High School communities in intentional, safe, and honest platforms focused on fostering relationships, developing leadership, and strengthening understanding.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to Pete Kadens, whose visionary outlook has inspired us to build bridges, forge connections, open doors, and establish Home to Home.

Power of the Pen Team Triumphs at Regionals

The junior high Power of the Pen team competed in the 2024 Regional Tournament at Lourdes University on Saturday. Ottawa Hills competed against 133 students from nearly 20 schools from across Northwest Ohio.  The eighth-grade team placed first. The following students ranked in the top 12 writers: Josie Hemke 5th place, Eleza Zaidid 3rd place, and Emily Chen 1st place. 7th grader Molly Mullan received an award for 12th place.

Coach Fischer hopes our students qualify so they can head to the state competition at Ashland University on May 16-17.

The team includes: Emily Chen, Shivani Pindiprolu, Eleza Zaidi, Josie Hemke, Evelyn Sandretto, Ruth Mezo, Molly Mullan. Special thanks to Natalie Nixon who served as a runner at the tournament.

Students participated in three rounds, having only 40 minutes to write about a given prompt. Power of the Pen is Ohio’s original interscholastic writing contest. According to the organization’s website, “We empower young people to find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own by engaging students in interscholastic writing tournaments and providing a platform for publication.”

Special thanks to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association for supporting this important extracurricular team. Wishing the Power of the Pen team all the best!  Good luck, Green Bears!
