 | Supervision at Football Games As we continue through football season, we want to remind families that all elementary students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when attending home football games, as stated in the elementary parent handbook. District staff do not monitor students outside the stadium gates during games. We encourage all students to enjoy the game by cheering on our Green Bears from the bleachers with their families. Ottawa Hills Police Department officers are present at all home games to address any concerns. Students and community members can also use our "See Something, Say Something" Safe Schools Reporting resources available on the district website. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our young Green Bears safe at football games. |

Tips for parents of Junior High Students as They Approach the End of the QuarterWith the end of the quarter quickly approaching, this is a crucial time for our students to focus on strong preparation and finish their courses successfully. We encourage you to partner with us in helping your child maintain their momentum and cross the finish line with confidence. Focus on Final PreparationThe next couple of weeks are essential for review and assessment. Please encourage your student to: Prepare for Final Assessments for the Quarter: Students should be actively studying and reviewing material from the entire quarter, not just the most recent chapters. Help them create a realistic study schedule that minimizes stress. Please note that not all classes have final assessments. Students can check in with their teachers about end of quarter assignments and assessments. Review Sessions: For some classes, teachers are hosting dedicated review sessions. Students should come prepared with specific questions about challenging topics. Seek Academic Support: Remind your student that extra help is readily available. The Foundry is open daily for support, including resources like the Math Lab and peer or teacher tutoring. They should actively seek out this support if they have any missing assignments or concepts they need to solidify.
Time for Organization and ReflectionA clear mind often starts with a clear space. The end of the quarter is the perfect time for students to clean out their lockers and completely organize their backpacks and class folders. This simple act can reduce stress and ensure they are not missing any vital notes or assignments. Finally, we encourage all students to take a moment to assess their current goals and set new, clear objectives for the upcoming quarter. Reflection is a critical part of growth. If your student is feeling overwhelmed or needs extra assistance with organization, study strategies, or setting goals, please remind them that our counseling department is available and ready to provide support. Thank you for encouraging your students to make this a focused and productive end to the quarter. |

2025 Homecoming Weekend Many thanks to students, staff, parents, and community partners who contributed to making the 2025 Homecoming Weekend a resounding success. The week of festivities, culminating in a beautiful weekend, would not happened without advisor Liz Puskala and the Sophomore Class Officers Yassin Ayad, Miles Wharry, Kacie Dale, Stella Kuhn, Sungjoo Park, and Nickel Fineske. We appreciate your dedication and organization of key events, which included coordinating the assembly, dance, theme video, voting, and the class floats. Friday's events were a wonderful display of school and community pride. A huge shout-out to Meredith Douglas, Julie Kowalczyk, Becky Hauck, and the OHPD for organizing Friday's annual Village Homecoming Parade. The fantastic weather and high turnout made for a magical afternoon for the Village of Ottawa Hills. Thank you to Michael Leeds and the OHHS Marching Band for their spirited participation in both the parade and the football game. The OHHS Choraliers elevated the festivities with a special joint performance of the National Anthem with the Marching Band on Friday before the game. Our hallways and gym were transformed with amazing and festive homecoming decorations thanks to parent volunteers Cecily Denny, Amy Barone, and the sophomore class officers. Many thanks go to our dance chaperones: Liz Puskala, Gloria Kreischer-Gajewicz, Chris Gajewicz, Mandy Ricketts, Ben McMurray, and the Ottawa Hills Police Department. The class officers and custodian Ron Morehouse deserves special recognition for handling the clean-up. Finally, a warm congratulations to all members of the Homecoming Court. In case you missed the crowning ceremony, Emily Timmerman was named the 2025 Homecoming Queen. |

Green Bears Reconnect: A Special Reunion Weekend It was a truly special weekend at Ottawa Hills as we welcomed back a large contingent of alumni, including graduates from the classes of 1970, 1993, and 2005, celebrating milestone reunions and reconnecting with the Green Bear Nation. It's always wonderful to see our graduates return to campus and reconnect with old friends. Many alumni showed their Green Bear pride by cheering on our football team at Friday's game. In addition, they hosted get-togethers at places like Stubborn Brother, classmates' homes, and Saturday night celebration for the Class of 2005 at Hannon's Block, which is owned by fellow alumnus Michael Stancati (OH '03). On Saturday morning, our Director of Development Erica Silk and I had the honor of leading tours of the junior/senior high school. It was a fantastic opportunity to walk the halls and reminisce. The alumni were genuinely impressed with the updates to our building, particularly the Foundry, our state-of-the-art science labs, and the vibrant art classrooms. Across the board, they all expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the education they received at Ottawa Hills and their former teachers. While they were amazed by the new spaces and technology, they weren't surprised by our continued tradition of excellence. It was a powerful reminder that while the building may evolve, the spirit and mission of Ottawa Hills remain the same. We were so happy to have our alumni back and look forward to seeing them again soon! |

AFS and Choral Department Join Forces for Culture Collage On Friday, AFS and the Choral Department joined forces to present the Culture Collage, a day to honor and explore the home country of our visiting AFS student. This year, AFS exchange student Nicolo Dipasquale presented to each choir class about Italy and Cerignola, his hometown. Students had opportunities to ask him questions about his experiences stateside and abroad, Ms. Hoss provided context for the Italian choral pieces the choirs have been preparing, and the choirs capped each period by performing their Italian language song for Nico. When asked about the mastery of our music, Nico said "molto bene!" Additionally, AFS students led a panel discussion in the Foundry during lunch while attendees snacked on light Italian fare. Big thanks to Nico, Ms. Shawaker, Ms. Hoss, and the AFS students for furthering the goals of building cultural connections and increasing global competence. |

JV Soccer Nips Junior High in Thrilling Shootout ⚽ On Sunday afternoon, the Ottawa Hills soccer program put on an exciting display of skill and mentorship as the boys Junior High team faced the High School JV squad in a scrimmage. The match was a tightly contested affair that ultimately ended in a narrow 5-4 victory for the JV team following a decisive penalty kick shootout. The scrimmage provided an excellent opportunity for both teams to gain valuable experience. It allowed the younger Junior High players to test their abilities against older, faster competition, while the JV squad benefited from practicing under pressure in a shootout scenario. The high school program also welcomed back a familiar face: Drew Hoffman (OH '20). Drew, who recently finished his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt and is currently attending medical school at UTMC, is lending his expertise as an assistant coach with the high school program. Special thanks go out to Becky Hauck from the Office of Village Life and Jr Radcliff for their help in coordinating and ensuring the success of this fun community event. Photo Credit: Katie Cho |
