Big Week for Green Bear Nation

It’s an action-packed week for our sports programs, and we need Green Bear Nation to show up and support our amazing student athletes.

We have several swim and dive students who qualified for States. These athletes have worked tirelessly all season to earn their spot among the best in the state. Join us for a Spirit Tunnel this Monday afternoon at 2:55 PM to give them a loud and proud send-off as they head to the state championships.

Congratulations to our boys qualifiers: Jack Johnson for Diving and Thomas Lathrop for the 200 IM and 500 free. Our girls qualifiers include Camille Weaver for Diving, Audrey Nixon for the 200 free and 500 free, and Rafaela Marson for the 100 breast. Additionally, the 400 free relay team of Audrey Nixon, Rafaela Marson, Mary Lathrop, and Ella Majerski will also be representing us at state.

The road to the championship continues for our basketball programs with two massive postseason matchups this week. Our girls basketball team heads to Napoleon this Wednesday at 6:00 PM for the District Semifinal against Liberty Benton. On Friday, the boys basketball team takes on Bluffton at home for the Sectional Final starting at 7:00 PM.

Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers: AFS Diversity Weekend at Ottawa Hills

This past weekend, Ottawa Hills High School celebrated our global friendships during our annual AFS Diversity Weekend. It was a powerful reminder that while we may come from different corners of the globe, the joy of a shared meal and a good laugh is universal.

The weekend kicked off on Friday morning as students from Finland, Pakistan, and Italy shared vibrant presentations about their cultures with Ottawa Hills students at both the elementary and junior/senior high schools. Following the presentations, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed a communal meal in the library, thoughtfully organized by Linda Sherry and her team of volunteers.

The afternoon continued with engaging activities designed to foster meaningful connections between the exchange students and the local community, including a trip to the Imagination Station. Special thanks go to Jay and Ian Jones and Katina Pattay for hosting Nico Dipasquale, our exchange student from Italy, and for opening their home for a wonderful dinner. We also want to thank the Kammeyer family for hosting the Ice Cream Social and Ellie for organizing the games. On Saturday, the students traveled to Dearborn, Michigan to visit The Henry Ford and view its incredible collection of historical artifacts.

Additionally, we owe a big shout-out to Ms. Shawaker for organizing our school activities and the mock food activity that kept everyone so engaged. Students mixed powder packets together to create miniature donuts, French fries, and sushi.

We also want to extend a very special thank you to Linda Sherry, Dennis Sherry, Helene Helburn, and Sherry Brancato for their dedicated efforts in making this weekend possible. Reflecting on the event, AFS Liaison Linda Sherry shares, "Our weekend was so much fun! I think our AFS and our OH kids had a wonderful time together...These are the moments that cross international barriers and build friendships across the world!"

If any family is interested in becoming a host family for next year please contact Linda Sherry at dsher343@aol.com.  Hosting an exchange student is one way to promote peace and understanding.

Ottawa Hills High School has been partnering with AFS since the early 1960’s and has hosted nearly a hundred exchange students from around the world. A plaque of the names of those students and their host families hangs in the main hallway.  To learn more about AFS click here.

Green Bears Give Back: Mrs. Richards’ Class Serves the Community

Last Thursday, February 19, students from Mrs. Richards’ class spent the day volunteering at the local food pantry.

The field trip was an opportunity for our Green Bears to see firsthand the impact of community service. From sorting donations to organizing the pantry floor, the class worked together to ensure that local families have access to the resources they need.

While the students stayed busy lifting boxes and checking expiration dates, the real takeaway was the perspective they gained. Mrs. Stacy Richards noted, "It really is such a great experience. The students always love it and it really is eye-opening for them."

The visit included an educational session about the reality of hunger in our area. The students learned that 1 in 4 children in the greater Toledo area faces food insecurity, meaning they don't always know where their next meal is coming from. They discussed how being hungry makes it harder to learn and stay healthy, seeing firsthand how Food for Thought provides essential support to our neighbors in need.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Richards and her hardworking students for dedicating their Thursday to such a worthy cause. You've made our school proud!
