 | Girl Scout Troop 1189, Bronze Award ProjectOur 5th Grade Girl Scout Troop is currently working on our Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is a community service project and the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. Troop 1189 has decided to work towards collecting 500 lbs. of plastic lids in partnership with Green Tree Plastics. The company will melt down the plastic into "lumber" and assemble it into a picnic table. The girls plan to place it at the sledding hill on Brookside Rd. They have already presented to Village Council, and their project was approved! We are now in the collection phase of the project. Our hope is to be finished collecting by April. There will be collection containers located at: - The Village Offices on Richards Road
- Stadium Concession Stand for folks to donate their caps as they purchase water bottles during the games.

Spotlighting Student Talent: Three Artists Honored at Regional 'Focus' Exhibition Congratulations to several of our talented student artists who were recognized at the recent 55th Annual Historic FOCUS Show! Nadia Frost Murnen, Zane Green, and Isabella Wilkins were all recognized for their outstanding work. Their work is featured in a massive exhibition that includes more than 300 pieces of art by students representing over 17 high schools and more than 27 art teachers from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Dating back to 1971, the Focus Show is one of the longest-running and largest high school art shows in the region. For the last 55 years, it has celebrated the passion that both students and teachers have for the visual arts and championed the importance of art education. This sense of connection was evident at the awards ceremony. Art teacher and Department Chair Caitlin Shawaker shares, “We are so proud of the creativity and craftsmanship of our students and it’s wonderful to see some of them get some recognition at this juried art show.” This wonderful achievement would not be possible without our dedicated art teachers, Kristin Johnson and Caitlin Shawker, who guide our students every day. A special thank you is also extended to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association and the Ottawa Hills Schools Foundation for their generous and ongoing support of our entire fine arts program. We encourage the school and community to celebrate our students' participation in this awesome show, which is deeply rooted in Toledo's artistic legacy. The exhibition runs through September 12 at the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery in the Fine Arts Center at Bowling Green State University. Click here for more information. Special thanks to Assistant Principal Dr. Mandy Ricketts for attending the awards ceremony, presenting the awards, and representing our school. |

Bringing You the Bear Facts: The Evolution and Impact of OH News As we settle into a fresh academic year at Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School, one daily tradition continues to unite our school community right at the start of the day: OH News. Produced entirely by the talented students in Mr. Gerry Davis’ broadcast journalism classes, OH News delivers essential daily information with energy, professionalism, and Green Bear pride. From keeping us informed on school events and public service announcements to delivering student birthday shoutouts and local weather, the broadcast keeps our building connected. Our coverage highlights include The Inside Edge covering Green Bear Athletics, Green Bear in the Crowd interviews highlighting student voices across all grade levels, daily weather forecasts, and important public service announcements that keep our school day running smoothly. Teacher Gerry Davis reflects on the caliber and vision of this year's broadcast team, sharing, "We have a capable and cohesive crew this year, distinguished by their technical confidence and presence in front of the lens. Our overarching goal for this season is to revitalize the broadcast by introducing new perspectives and fresh on-camera talent." This year's team is driven by a clear mission. Senior and student producer Brody Martinez shares, "The expectations for this year's class have never been higher. After last year being a little bit of a bumpy ride, we as a class are determined to produce an amazing show day in and day out. We hope you enjoy the shows just as much as we do making it." Shout out to Mr. Davis and his broadcast journalism team for their hard work behind the camera every single day! Go Green Bears! |

Friday Night Lights: Green Bears Move to 3-0 with Big Win and New Traditions On Friday night, Ottawa Hills edged out a victory against the Swanton Bulldogs at Niedermeir Stadium, keeping our regular season record a flawless 3-0. A massive shout out to Green Bear Nation for packing the stands, and to our student section for bringing the energy and spirit. The night was powered by incredible performances from the OHHS Marching Band led by Drum Major Sama Kapadia and Instrumental Music Director Michael Leeds. Their Iconic Beatles setlist featured hits like Twist and Shout, I Want to Hold Your Hand, and Paint It Black. The crowd favorite was Paperback Writer which included standing the senior choreographed band dance! Special thanks as well to Cheer and Dance Team Advisor Wendi Weber for resurrecting the dance team and keeping these cherished traditions thriving. We also want to recognize Coach Geoff Skibinski and his staff for their fantastic leadership and for starting meaningful new traditions. Before ringing the Victory Bell on Friday, the entire team ran over to the stands to lead fans in singing our alma mater, a truly special moment! Looking Ahead to Next Friday: It is going to be an even bigger night at Niedermeier Stadium as the Green Bears host Port Clinton at 7:00 PM! Join us early for the Athletic Boosters Annual BBQ, and stick around as the OH Schools Foundation honors the newest class of Distinguished Alumni inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame. See you there! |
