March 2025

March 2025

A Message From Mr. McMurray....

March is a busy month at the junior/senior high school. As you know, we are quickly approaching the end of third quarter (March 14). We encourage students to check Powerschool, stay on top of their academic requirements, and make use of the wide range of student supports.

Spring is also the time for state testing, the beginning of a new sports season, and students make course selections for the 24-25 school year.

Please check Powerschool for unpaid fees and fines. The portal for online payments can be accessed through PowerSchool or on the school website. Unfortunately, yearbooks cannot be distributed to students with any unpaid fees and fines.

Thank you to those of you who have already shared your valuable feedback regarding our ongoing efforts to meet the educational needs of your children as we work as educators to evaluate our current JHHS schedule. Your input is essential as we conduct a comprehensive review of how we provide access to our extensive curricular offerings, allocate instructional time for each subject area, offer academic support and intervention, prepare students for college and careers, and create enrichment opportunities.

5. Pedestrian Safety Week

March 10 – 14, 2025

What a great time of year to remind ourselves how to share the roadways safely.

  • Walk facing traffic and wheel with traffic
  • Walk across streets at crosswalks and always look left, right, and left again before crossing the street
  • Bikes and scooters follow the road signs; be sure your bikes and scooters have front lights and red back lights/reflectors
  • Drivers: stay alert! Do not allow yourself to be distracted by cell phone use or earbuds (It’s the law)
  • When walking or wheeling in the dark, wear bright reflective clothing, and carry a flashlight so you can be easily seen

Join the Village Stroll on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. Walkers, dogs, strollers should meet at the high school flagpole to join the one-mile family walk. Dress to be seen (literally). The OH Boosters will be selling pizza and goodies before and after the walk.

Join the fun!

Exciting Day at the Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair

This past Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, several talented high school students showcased their innovative research at the Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair. A big congratulations to our exceptional seniors—Annie Bahar and Ashley Wang—as well as our outstanding juniors, Audrey Nixon, Quinton Smith, Twayne Lai, and Finn Genzman. These bright young minds presented on a diverse range of topics, sparking curiosity and inspiring us all. They are part of Jeremy Nixon’s Honors Scientific Research course, which pairs students with researchers from the University of Toledo, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience.

Audrey Nixon and Quinton Smith both received awards from the Environmental Protection Agency for their outstanding research. Audrey’s project, The Effects of Toxic Algae on Plant Growth and Function, explored the impact of harmful algal blooms on vegetation. Quinton’s research, Space-Based Efficiency on Tandem Perovskite Solar Cells, examined advancements in solar energy technology for space applications.

Special thanks to Paul Genzman for the photos.

ASL Students Engage in Real-Time Conversations with Member of the Deaf Community

During the week of February 24, our American Sign Language (ASL) students had the valuable opportunity to apply their learning by engaging in real-time conversations with a Deaf individual via Zoom. This experience not only allowed students to practice their signing skills but also fostered meaningful connections with someone from a different background. Students demonstrated impressive proficiency in using their hands, facial expressions, and body posture to communicate effectively through nonverbal means, further enhancing their understanding of ASL and Deaf culture.  Special thanks to Kay Cocke for this update and all of the work she does to ensure the students have a positive experience in ASL.

Celebrating Romanticism: Ottawa Hills’ Annual Romantic Idol Tradition Lives On

Sophomores taking English with teachers Karen Fischer and Sara Eisenbaum have carried on the Romantic Idol tradition, which began at Ottawa Hills more than twenty years ago.

Through this event, students celebrate the significance of poetry from the Romantic literary movement and explore the works of renowned authors such as Felicia Dorothea Hemans, William Wordsworth, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Walt Whitman, Mary Shelley, John Keats, William Butler Yeats, Edgar Allan Poe, and Emily Dickinson. These writers shaped that literary era through their exploration of nature, individual emotion, imagination, and the supernatural.

Much like American Idol, contestants first compete in a series of in-class rounds before finalists are selected to present their interpretations to the entire student body. This year, the finalists captivated the audience by bringing these timeless themes to life on stage.

Winner: Jasmine Hajjar “The Sun” by Felicia Dorothea Hemans

First Runner Up: Ashleigh Speakman “We Are Seven” by William Wordsworth

Second Runner Up: Ethan Phillips “The Kraken” by Alfredl, Lord Tennyson

A heartfelt thank you to Karen Fischer, Sara Eisenbaum, and Darrin Broadway for organizing this inspiring event. Special appreciation goes to our Romantic Idol judges—Sahil Parikh, Avi Hanusz, and Josef Duley—as well as emcee Nina Clark. Additionally, we are grateful to the sound and light crew—Claire Hawkins, Catelin Hawkins, and Lowell Shreve—for ensuring a seamless production. Finally, a special thank you to the Ottawa Hills Schools Foundation for their generous financial support in keeping this cherished tradition alive.
