Understanding the Adolescent Brain: Alcohol, Anxiety, and Risk-Taking

Led by neurosurgeon Dr. Brian Hoeflinger and Dr. Cindy Hoeflinger, this engaging presentation blends medical insight with personal experience to explore how alcohol affects the adolescent brain, how anxiety and stress shape adolescent decision-making, and what can happen when risk-taking leads to life-altering outcomes. This conversation is designed to help parents better understand their children’s world and feel more equipped to support safer, healthier choices.

The goal of the Empowering Parents Series is to provide families with meaningful information that supports students both in and beyond the classroom. In previous years, we have explored topics such as college expenses, ADHD, and collegiate athletics. This year’s focus continues our commitment to addressing timely and relevant issues facing today’s adolescents and families.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Foundry Advisory Board members Julie Paulenich, Michelle Walker, Cecily Denny, and Jennifer Gruber for their continued support, guidance, and dedication to our programming. Their commitment plays a vital role in strengthening our community and making events like this possible.

Students Shine at the First Annual Soft Skills Showdown

On Friday, January 23, more than 90 junior students participated in the Ottawa Hills inaugural Soft Skills Showdown.  Held in the Foundry, the Soft Skills Showdown was a series of business challenges specifically designed to put students' soft skills to the test. In today’s rapidly changing job market, technical knowledge is only half the battle. This event focused on the four aspects of professional success: professional communication, creative problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world decision-making.

An event of this scale requires an incredible amount of coordination. A massive "Thank You" goes out to lead organizer, Crystal Burnworth, and the dedicated core team who brought this vision to life: Jeanette Axford, Amanda Neuendorf,  Angela Deitrich, Troy Brown, Sam Abbott, Sara Eisenbaum, Sahil Parikh, Twayne Lai, Caitlin Shawaker, Jessica Loudermilk, Alta Richter, Carrie Bork, Quinton Smith, and Rohan Padhye.

We were also honored to host an impressive panel of local professionals who volunteered their time to serve as judges. Their feedback provided our students with invaluable "real-world" perspectives that simply can't be found in a textbook.

Our heartfelt thanks to our judges: Kristie Feeback, Emery Geosits, Dan Skilliter, Andrew Montey, Laura Megeath, Shannon Szyperski, Rupali Chandar, Sean Mercer, Julie Paulenich, Mona Parikh, Katie Cho, Kathy Lathrop, Adam Smidi, Craig A. Turner, M.Ed., JD Smith, Tyson Garner, John Roemer, Brandon Charpied, Kevin Friedman, Travis Tangeman, and Marie Duley.

Special thanks to the final round judges: Dr. Bill Miller, Dr. Adam Fineske, Troy Brown, Sara Eisenbaum, and Quinton Smith.  They selected three overall winners which included Jasmine Hajjar, Lowell Shreve, and Chris Culler.

Thanks to the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association and the University of Toledo for the support for this event.

Congratulations to all our juniors who participated! You proved that you have the talent, the drive, and the professional polish to take on whatever the future holds.
