A Meaningful Lesson: Students Honor Our Veterans

Last week, our entire student body took part in a powerful and moving lesson to honor Veterans Day, reminding us all of the profound sacrifices made by our nation's service members. The activity began with students watching a series of videos featuring Veterans and their loved ones sharing personal experiences from the Vietnam War. This firsthand perspective offered a truly impactful look at the realities of service, fostering a deeper understanding among our students.

Following a heartfelt discussion, students used their new understanding and gratitude to write personal letters to veterans or active-duty service members. Their messages thanked them for their service and included reflections on sacrifice, the experience of being away from home, bravery, and personal inspiration.

The response was overwhelming! We are proud to announce that more than 450 letters were collected and will be delivered to service members and veterans this week. This meaningful, school-wide activity was expertly organized by Social Studies teacher and Department Chair, Steve Bobak. We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Bobak for bringing this important and inspiring lesson to our students.

Volunteer Focus Update: Helping Our Community

Last week, the Volunteer Focus club dedicated their efforts to supporting animal welfare with a rewarding visit to the local Humane Society. Club members, along with advisor Stacy Richards and English teacher Sara Eisenbaum, arrived with four large bags of generous donations. These supplies, which included cozy blankets, delicious treats, and soft towels, are essential for comforting the animals currently awaiting adoption.

The group received a special tour of the Humane Society's new facility, giving them insight into the operations and the dedicated care the animals receive daily. After the tour, members actively assisted the staff by putting together treat bags for the dogs and cats. For many students, the highlight of the trip was the cherished moments they spent interacting with some of the dogs, offering pets and affection that bring comfort to the animals. This experience was a powerful demonstration of how student volunteers can directly impact the lives of animals in need.

Volunteer Focus is now shifting its attention from furry friends to addressing food insecurity right here in our community.

The club is sponsoring a Canned Food Drive running all this week, from Monday, November 17, through Friday, November 21.

This is your chance to make a difference in the lives of local families in need! We encourage all students and staff to contribute.

  • What to Donate: Non-perishable canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruits, tuna, etc.)
  • Where to Drop Off: Look for the donation box located near the school office or drop items off directly in Room 211.

Please consider donating to help make this drive a great success!

Making a Difference: Toledo Smiles in Action!

On Friday last week, members of Toledo Smiles, a relatively new OHHS student organization, volunteered their time and expertise at Wildwood Dentistry. Volunteers assisted in the office of dentists and Village residents Jamie and Michael O'Neill by welcoming and visiting with veterans.

This impactful volunteer event, which provided vital dental access, was held as part of the organization’s effort to celebrate Veterans Day and to express gratitude to our veterans for their service.

Organization President Arianna O’Neill shares, "The event helps veterans get access to dental care, showing them the love and care they deserve. The Toledo Smile Project is about making sure everyone leaves with a smile on their face.”

The Toledo Smiles organization is committed to continuing its work throughout the community! They will soon be organizing a donation drive to collect hygiene items and portable board and card games for families living in local shelters. Keep an eye out for ways you can contribute and help bring comfort and smiles to families in need!

A huge thank you to all the volunteers and Wildwood Dentistry for showing incredible generosity!

For more information about the Toledo Smiles organization, please reach out to senior Arianna O'Neill or advisor Erica Silk.

Quiz Bowl Team Competes in NAQT Memorial Tournament

The Ottawa Hills Quiz Bowl Team had a phenomenal week, showcasing their knowledge and competitive spirit in both tournament play and television matches!

This past Saturday, our students competed in the NAQT Anita Zuber Memorial tournament at Hicksville High School. Against a strong field of 32 mostly larger schools, our team earned an impressive 8th place overall!

The highlight performance of the day was our stunning morning upset of St. John's Jesuit. St. John's is the highest-performing team in our league and went on to place 2nd in the tournament, making our victory a significant achievement! We will face off against St. John's, St. Francis, and Pandora-Gilboa as one of the four division leaders undefeated in league play at a meet on December 1st.

Adding to the excitement, the team went 2-0 in their opening round matches this past Wednesday for the BGSU Brain Game, which will be televised on WBGU-PBS. We will return to film later matches after winter break—stay tuned for broadcast dates!

A special thank you goes out to the team's dedicated advisor, Mr. Tim Adkins, and the Ottawa Hills Schools Parent Association (OHSPA) for their generous and ongoing support of this enriching extracurricular activity.

Ben Silverman ('13) Inducted into TAAC Hall of Fame!

The Ottawa Hills High School community extends a huge congratulations to Ben Silverman ('13), who was recently inducted into the Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC) Hall of Fame on Saturday evening.

During his four years at Ottawa Hills, Ben was a standout athlete on both the golf and basketball teams, earning numerous awards. His time here culminated in a major achievement: being part of the State Championship-winning golf team in 2013.

After graduation, Ben took his talents to the next level, attending Duke University where he was a member of the varsity golf team. Ben and his wife, Kelly, have since returned to Toledo, where Ben currently works for Hylant.  Upon receiving the Hall of Fame honor, Ben expressed deep gratitude for the award and his formative years at Ottawa Hills High School. He specifically acknowledged the significant impact of his coaches, Jim McGill (Golf) and John Lindsay (Basketball), thanking them for their guidance and support.

This induction is a well-deserved recognition of Ben's incredible contributions to Ottawa Hills athletics!  Special thanks to TAAC Commisioner Rick Kaifis and MVCDS Athletic Director for organizing the event
