Ottawa Hills HOSA Club Shines in First Regional Competition!
The newly established HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) club at Ottawa Hills proudly competed for the first time at the regional competition held this past week at the University of Toledo. Nearly a dozen Ottawa Hills students joined approximately 800 peers from across northwest Ohio for this annual event.
HOSA is a student organization designed to prepare students for careers in health care and related fields. It is an integral part of career and technical education programs offered in high schools, technical schools, community colleges, and universities.
Freshman Ellie Kammeyer, founder of the Ottawa Hills HOSA chapter, shared her inspiration, "I started HOSA at Ottawa Hills because I’ve always been passionate about the healthcare world and wanted to connect with other students who share the same interest and drive as me. It’s given me a chance to grow as a leader, learn new skills, and make a difference while pursuing something I truly care about. I would like to thank Nurse Ku, our advisor, for all his support."
Ellie played a key role in launching the club by inviting school nurse Brandon Ku to serve as the advisor, creating organizational by-laws, raising $375 through bake sales, and holding the group’s first meeting just a few months ago. The club now boasts nearly 20 members. The following attended the regional competition: Hana Mashali, Eleonora Kammeyer, Catelin Hawkins, Sofia Elfituri, Gabriella Howard, Kaylin Zheng, Kara Moynihan, Eleza Zaidi, Shivani Pindiprolu, Noora Khan-Akbani, and Eylan Humaida.
Nurse Ku emphasized the benefits of the program, stating, "HOSA provides a platform for students to develop their leadership and communication skills while also actively exploring healthcare-based career paths. It prepares them for future roles in the field and offers invaluable networking opportunities with healthcare professionals."
The club’s inaugural competition was a success, with eight students advancing to the State competition in April in downtown Toledo. Congratulations to the following winners:
Catelin Hawkins, Ellie Kammeyer, and Hana Mashali, who finished second in the Exploring Biomedical Innovation event.
Gabriella Howard, Kara Moynihan, and Kaylin Zheng, who claimed first place in the Biomedical Debate event.
Shivani Pindiprolu and Eleza Zaidi placed second in the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) event.
A special thank you to Nurse Brandon Ku for his leadership, Erica Silk for chaperoning, and parent drivers Jana Kammeyer, Wajeeha Zaidi, Khouload Mohamed, Krystin Moynihan for their support. Congratulations to the entire team on this outstanding achievement! Follow OH HOSA on Instagram at OHHS_HOSA for more details.

Elementary Students Shine in OHHS Dance Team Halftime Clinic
The Office of Village Life and the OHHS Dance Team recently joined forces to host a fun and engaging dance clinic for elementary-aged students. The clinic provided younger students with an exciting opportunity to learn dance routines, build confidence, and connect with older student mentors from the high school team.
After several practices, the group took to the court for a memorable halftime performance during the boys’ basketball game on Saturday. The elementary dancers dazzled the crowd with their energy and enthusiasm, showcasing the hard work they put into learning the routine. The performance not only highlighted their new skills but also demonstrated the positive impact of teamwork and mentorship.
Senior Lena Bazzoli shares, “The kids dance clinic is always one of our favorite activities during our season! We love sharing our passion for dance with the younger dancers with hopes of teaching them how to support each other and learn from each other. They are so fun to work with and make the cutest dance partners on the court!”
This event would not have been possible without the collaboration and dedication of several key individuals. A special thank you goes to Becky Hauck from the Office of Village Life for helping to coordinate the clinic, dance team advisor Sophie Heidenreich for her guidance and leadership, and the OHHS Dance Team for their enthusiasm and support in mentoring the younger participants.
