OHbreathe welcomes panelists during Black History Month

OHbreathe is a student-led initiative to address student wellness. The purpose is to influence positive transformation in the junior/senior high school through inspiring monthly workshops and speakers. Last week OHbreathe presented a panel discussion focusing on Black Excellence. Thank you to the panelists for sharing insights into their personal journeys, career paths, and life experiences.

Meet the Panelists: Sonia McNair, CEO and founder of Sonia Organics, spoke about entrepreneurship. Brandon Carter, not only a paraprofessional but also the head football coach at OHHS, spoke on leadership and dedication. Jera Stewart, the owner of Jera’s Heavenly Sweets located near UT, shared her entrepreneurial journey, inspiring young minds with her passion and determination. Jade Nelson, an officer with the Ottawa Hills Police Department, spoke on the importance of community service and law enforcement.

The boys' basketball team will take on Emmanuel Christian tonight at 7 p.m. A reminder that tournament tickets must be purchased ahead of time through OHSAA. Tickets are very limited and once capacity is reached in sales, the ticket page will read "Sold Out." When purchasing, search for today's game and use the code: GREENBEARS24

A reminder that OH Booster and TAAC passes are not accepted at playoff contests.

Welcome, Mr. Siloy

Today marks the first full work day for our new Treasurer/CFO, Mr. Tom Siloy. As he worked part-time the past few weeks while transitioning into our district, he has already secured a safety grant in partnership with our grants committee, headed by Mrs. Erica Silk, Director of Development. He continues to look for cost savings and additional revenue for the district, such as the motor excise tax reimbursement he successfully completed last week.

A reminder the Board has directed the Treasurer's office to place a 12.9 mill operating levy on the March 19, 2024, ballot. This levy, if approved, will generate $2.3 million. Early voting began this week at the Lucas County Board of Elections.

"Calder Café" showcases student creativity

The annual OHSPA sponsored Art Fair breakfast took place at the elementary school this week. Parents and caregivers enjoyed an early breakfast at the "Calder Café" in the new gym and were able to view student artwork lining the halls of the elementary before the start of school. Special thanks to OHSPA, Mrs. Bodziak, Mrs. Danzeisen, and all the volunteers who helped make the Art Fair a success. See the 2024 Art Fair Winners here.

Plan Ahead: Solar Eclipse Early Release
The Board of Education has added an early release for all students on Monday, April 8 at 1 p.m. Note that elementary students will follow a special release schedule:

12:40 p.m. (kindergarten)
12:45 p.m. (loading den)
12:50 p.m. (walkers)

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources states, "A total solar eclipse is a rare and spectacular event. The last total solar eclipse visible in Ohio was in 1806, and the next will occur in 2099." Tips for viewing the event safely can be found here.

Pedestrian Safety Week is March 11-15
Mark your calendar for the 2nd annual Pedestrian Safety Week. Each day is dedicated to an important reminder for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers to share the road safely. Read more here

Monday: Walk against traffic, bike with traffic.
Tuesday: Ohio law requires hands free devices while driving.
Wednesday: Be seen by wearing reflective gear when walking/cycling.
Thursday: Always use designated crosswalks.
Friday: Follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signs and signals.

Leaping through the decades

The elementary school celebrated Leap Year in style this week by dressing up on February 29 in the style of their favorite decade. Pictured: elementary staff sport different decades that are swinging, rad, tubular and more.
